Sam Bleiweis

Sam Bleiweis is the anchor of the 4pm and 6pm. Weekday newscasts on WIS.

Since joining the WIS news team in June 2015, Sam has covered some of the biggest stories across the Palmetto State.

Just months after arriving in Columbia, Sam was in Holly Hill at 3 a.m. when the small town began flooding during the historic 1,000-year flood. She was on the presenter’s desk during the continuous reporting WIS provided to its viewers for several days during the height of the crisis. After the flood, Sam covered countless weather reports for WIS, including live coverage during Tropical Storm Michael and as an anchor for coverage of Hurricanes Matthew, Irma and Florence.

As a presenter and reporter, Sam reports live on location to tell big stories. When President Trump visited Airport High School in June 2018, bringing with him thousands of supporters, Sam partnered with WIS’ Greg Adaline to anchor field reporting. She also reported on another big visit when Vice President Mike Pence came to Columbia with Senator Tim Scott to tour Opportunity Zones. She covered the 2018 gubernatorial race from the primary through the general election. When a gunman entered a Pittsburgh synagogue and opened fire in 2018, Sam Field anchored the outpouring of support at a packed prayer vigil at a Midlands synagogue.

The stories she loves to tell are human interest, feature pieces that touch people’s hearts. One of the stories that struck her the most was that of a 5-year-old child with terminal cancer who was surprised with Disney on Ice tickets just weeks before she died. As one of the WIS evening presenters, Sam won an Emmy Award for Best News Show in 2017. In 2019, Sam received the South Carolina Broadcasters Association’s Award of Merit for Anchor of the Year. Sam is involved in the community and has served as a master of ceremonies and emcee for numerous local events. Sam is passionate about the work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and regularly moderates events for the organization including the annual Man and Woman of the Year Awards. She is also involved in the work of the Special Olympics, opening the South Carolina Summer Games in recent years and covering the annual torch relay beforehand.

Sam spent her undergraduate career at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, graduating with degrees in history and journalism. She was a four-year member of the Emory University women’s soccer team that finished second in the 2012 NCAA championships. She was also an active member of her Alpha Delta Pi sorority. After graduating from college, Sam landed her first broadcasting job in upstate New York at Fox 40 HD News in Binghamton. She was on the station for a year before taking the job at WIS and moving closer to her home state of Florida.

Sam Bleiweis joined the WIS team as a reporter in June 2015. You can find them on the ground during the week to cover local stories and on afternoon and evening programs bringing you the latest developments from the Alert Center.

Before heading back south, Sam anchored and reported for Fox 40 News in Binghamton, New York. During her time on what she calls “the arctic tundra” (she’s a native Californian, and her family now lives in Florida!), she hosted the station’s 10 p.m. show, covering big stories in the southern plains and in the state of New York. Sam likes to be in the thick of things. She was at the center of the crowd as Binghamton University students staged a massive protest over the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. She also followed and reported on the third murder trial of a local man, which spanned several months and received extensive national coverage.

While in college, Sam spent a summer internship at a local broadcaster in her hometown of Gainesville, Florida, learning how to be behind and in front of the camera. During her senior year, she interned at WSB-TV and worked part-time as a reporter and color commentator for the Atlanta Silverbacks Professional Men’s Soccer Team.

When she’s not running around Columbia with her camera, the (residual) athlete in her can be found running in or in a loud, tough spin class. In her free time, she enjoys trying out new recipes in her kitchen or relaxing on the couch with a cup of tea, a good book and her two kittens.
