Chris Olave is a reliable number two option on an offense that can be tasked with being a vertical field stretcher on the outside.
Olave constantly threatens secondaries with his speed. Defenders must always be on guard when the ball snaps, leaving a cushion that opens up a lot for Olave’s overall game. He times the snap well and quickly bursts off the line to get up and into his route. He can go from a full sprint to stopping in place to return to the ball. Though his physique is thinner, he excels when tasked with barrel blocking. Shows control of his body during the course of his routes as well as at the snap point to control himself in the air. As a route runner, he has the speed, footwork, and quickness to make himself an elite route runner, especially against zone coverage. Olave remains a threat due to his close-range quickness and long speed after capture. He can move his body sideways with such agility and suddenness that he catches defenders off guard and leaves them stuck in the mud. Possesses strong hands capable of plucking the ball out of the air or belaying it safely near the touchline. Contributes to punt coverage special teams as a marksman.
The Ohio State receiver constantly battles pressmen’s coverage because of his lack of physicality at the line of scrimmage. He relies on hesitation, which can work, but he needs to evolve his release package to make it more multidimensional and effective against physical corners. Olave is a little scared in traffic when he knows he’s about to be hit. His arms aren’t that long, which limits his catch radius.
Chris Olave has been a mainstay in the Ohio State receiver room since his true freshman season. Olave plays alongside him with elite talent and hasn’t failed to shine on his own. He inspires with Elite Burst, quickness and speed. With that kind of speed, he can stretch the field on the outside or threaten the middle of the field with the ability to lengthen plays after the catch. He has all the skills in the world to be a solid recipient of compliments. He may struggle to be a real first option due to his lack of physicality and length. There is no doubt that he will make a difference at the next level.
Chris Olave was born on June 27, 2000 and attended Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, California as a freshman and sophomore. As a junior, he transferred to Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, California, but had to sit out. Mission Hills High School is a premier school in San Diego, California, an area that consistently produces elite football players. Olave was a multi-athlete in football, track, basketball and baseball. He exploded in his senior year, catching 93 passes for 1,764 yards and 26 touchdowns. Olave was classified as a three-star prospect in the 2018 class according to the 247Sports Composite, although the website 247Sports itself classified him as a four-star prospect. He received offers from several top-notch colleges and eventually committed to the state of Ohio. Playing sparingly as a freshman, Olave made 12 catches for 197 yards and three touchdowns in seven games. He broke out as a sophomore and generated 48 receptions for 840 yards and 12 touchdowns. In a junior season curtailed by COVID, Olave continued to impress, mustering 50 receptions for 729 yards and seven touchdowns. Despite being eligible, he declined to submit for the 2021 NFL Draft and chose to return for his senior year. The game paid off as Olave spun in his best collegiate season, catching 65 catches for 936 yards and 13 touchdowns. His performance in the senior season earned him First-Team All-Big Ten honors. Olave gave up the 2021 Rose Bowl to prepare for the 2022 NFL Draft. Given his high school pedigree, recruiting profile, and solid performance at one of the top college programs in the country, Olave is expected to be selected in the first round.

Alabama and LSU have produced several first-round wide receivers in recent years. Ohio State could take the mantle next as Wide Receiver U if Chris Olave is the school’s second receiver selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The 21-year-old is a smooth route runner with speed to pound defenders deep. In addition to his excellent hands, at 189 pounds (6 ft 1) Olave gives him the size and athleticism to win contested catches. The four-star contender finished his career with 175 receptions, 2,702 yards and 35 touchdowns as part of college football’s most talented receiving bracket.
2022 Chris Olave draft strategy:
The 2022 draft is deep at the receiver, causing Olave to fall in rookie drafts by the end of the first round or early second round. Up to four quarterbacks, three running backs, and three to five receivers could be put in front of Olave, making him a great value after the 10th pick. He has the talent to be a wide receiver one but is likely a wide receiver two that will be a regular starter in Dynasty lineups for years to come.
Best case scenario:
It would be almost perfect for Olave to face a good team towards the end of the first round. Several good franchises with high volume pass attacks could use a talented pass catcher. Arizona, Buffalo, Tampa Bay, Kansas City and Green Bay are perfect landing spots for the former Buckeye. All have great quarterbacks and a good number one receiver, allowing Olave to come in as number two and start early in his career.
Worst case scenario:
The worst case scenario is Olave falling early in the second round and a team with no established quarterback. Houston and the Giants are two teams with early second-round picks and would diminish the value of a rookie receiver. Both teams have a huge question mark at quarterback and are in the bottom ten in passing.
-Olave’s best attribute is his ability to play beyond defense. His presence can be felt in every game I’ve studied and he opens the field for his teammates. Other than that, he’s not a one-trick pony. He runs comebacks and curls just as effectively as he does on posts and go routes. He’s a home run hitter who can also win as a third down in the middle of the field. This is a special combination. (NFL.com) (6/20/21)
11/22/21 – In his final game in Horseshoe, Ohio, Chris Olave proved why he’s one of the top receivers in the country. With seven receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns during the Buckeyes’ 56-7 loss at Michigan State, Olave got the attention of NFL scouts. His second total was the 35th touchdown of his career and broke the Buckeyes’ all-time school record previously held by David Boston. It’s safe to say that the former three-star recruit exceeded expectations during his time in Columbus. The San Diego native has now surpassed 700 receiving yards in three straight seasons and shares the field with several future NFL wideouts. An excellent ball tracker, he will look to take his downfield success to the next level in 2022. But first, Olave has plans to bring The Natty! home.
