Since his parents were music teachers for the Purchase Line and Indiana Area school districts, they paved the way for their child and made it easy for him to settle in.

Beginning his melodic foray at age three, he played drums and was in a jazz threesome called Paj 3 with bassist Phil Kuehn (an Indiana native) and musician Angelo Versace throughout high school.

Missing Update – What happened to him? Joe Saylor has cut himself off from online media. His post on Twitter was in 2019 while deleting his record from Instagram. Therefore, his fans are suspicious regarding his disappearance. Some see it because of illness and others think he’s spending his days off.
Other things being equal, there have been no reports of him in recent days. He will appear neither in the established press nor in the online media. Since no gossip about him is being weakened or contaminated by COVID, he should probably be healthy. Since he hasn’t posted a single travel picture either, he’s probably not a vacationer.

Welcome to Sleep Diaries, a new series from Prevention.com in which interesting people share their week-long nighttime habits. They will tell you, the reader, how they end their day, how they fall asleep, sleep through or get back to sleep, and how they feel when they wake up in the morning. Why? Because sleep is America’s most wanted thing. We chase it like an elusive elixir that makes us look younger and feel less stressed. (Maybe because it does.) We thought by getting people to share what works for them—and what doesn’t—it might help you find better ZZZs. Or at least something entertaining to read. First we have Joe Saylor, who can be seen every night at 11:35 p.m. on CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He’s the drummer in the cowboy hat. A Julliard graduate, he is now the percussionist in Jon Batiste’s hugely successful jazz band Stay Human. Joe has really good taste in jazz music and pillows.
Sunday March 31st
I went to the evening service at my church in Times Square. It fits better into my late night routine than the morning services. My pastor continued our fasting series by preaching on Jesus’ last words on the cross. After that, about 20 friends and I went to an Indian restaurant called Dhaba. I took an Uber home and changed into a pair of very light sweatpants, which I wear to bed. They are a gift from a friend who bought them for me while on vacation in Thailand. I wear one of those white undershirts over that.
I have a queen bed that I bought on Craigslist about 10 years ago (I need a new bed!). It’s still comfortable. My bedding is fresh because my cleaning lady Irene keeps bringing me new bedding. She is so cute. I have a UGG cotton duvet. It’s very warm and cosy. My main pillow is one and I also have two decorative pillows.
Monday, April 1st
Feeling rested from the weekend, I finished taping the Late Show just after 7pm. Tony Award-winning actor Nathan Lane was on the show. We did makeup together and I asked him what we should play for his walk-on. He said his favorite song is “Our Love Is Here To Stay” by George and Ira Gershwin. It’s also one of my favorites, so we played that for him.
I went to my dressing room, changed my clothes and went to the West Village to meet my girlfriend at an AIDS residency center where she plays cards with the residents every other Monday. She was packing when I arrived. We went to Smalls Jazz Club, one of my favorite spots in town. We heard drumming genius Ari Hoenig and his band.
I don’t usually have trouble falling asleep, but tonight I played an episode of a podcast called Brilliant Perspectives by this guy Graham Cooke. It’s titled “A Prayer of Thankfulness” and is only 11 minutes long, but I never made it through the whole thing.
Tuesday April 2nd
We had an extra long shot of the Late Show; Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones was our guest and H.E.R. carried out. I finished around 7:30pm. and went into a healing prayer room in Hell’s Kitchen. It involves a lot of inner healing, emotionally, spiritually and even physically. That evening, a woman said she had severe discomfort in her neck and, for example, could not do a plank without severe pain. After the prayer exercise, she was able to do a plank and those leg raises that make it more difficult, and said she didn’t feel anything.
Later, I went out to dinner with my girlfriend, our friend Mike, and the late show band’s bassist, Louis Cato. Louis is a sushi connoisseur so we enjoyed great sushi at Sushi Yasaka. The next morning, I sleep in until about 8am, walk to my local bodega, and grab a fresh celery juice. I’ve been doing this every morning for a few months now.

Wednesday, April 3rd
After work, I met Eddie, the original saxophonist on Stay Human, and his fiancée Kat at a wine bar. (I don’t drink, so I got a water.) Then I went to the gym. I took the subway home and walked out the door just in time to grab my cymbals and head to the Smoke Jazz & Supper Club. I lead the “Round Midnight” session at the club. This time the legendary Johnny O’Neal came and sang with us.
Wednesday is usually the night I get very little sleep because my performance on Smoke is late and I often don’t get to bed until around 3 or 4am. This night was no exception.
Thursday, April 4th
I was very sick after the show. I went to my girlfriend’s apartment and she took care of me. She is the best.
Friday, April 5th
My band Stay Human played a very cool gig. It was the opening night of a series celebrating the influence of African American culture called Soundtrack to America. It took place at The Shed, a new music venue in the brand new Hudson Yards. Jon Batiste assembled a marching band of more than 100 musicians to commemorate the return of the 369th Infantry’s Harlem Hellfighters Band from WWI. The night was produced by Steve McQueen and Quincy Jones.
Saturday, April 6th
I still wake up at 8am, grab my celery juice and prepare for friends visiting from out of town. It was beautiful, so we took a stroll through Prospect Park, went record shopping, and then went to St. Mazie in Williamsburg for dinner. I took an Uber home and listened to some of the records I bought that day. I started with Michael Jackson’s thriller on vinyl and thought no, this is too much for me now and switched to Ray Charles to relax.
