musical artist

Diane Eve Warren (born September 7, 1956[1][2]) is an American songwriter, musician and record producer.

Warren’s career began in 1985 with DeBarge’s Rhythm of the Night. In the late 1980s, she joined forces with British music company EMI, where she became the first songwriter in Billboard magazine history to have seven hits, all by different artists, in the singles chart simultaneously, propelling EMI’s UK chairman to prompted Peter Reichardt to call her “the most important songwriter in the world”. She has been ranked as the third most successful female artist in the UK.

Warren has written nine number one songs and 32 top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including “If I Could Turn Back Time” (Cher, 1989), “Because You Loved Me” (Celine Dion, 1996), “How Do I Live” (LeAnn Rimes, 1997) and “I Don’t Want to Miss Anything” (Aerosmith, 1998). Two of the top 13 hits in the Hot 100’s 57-year history were composed by Warren. She has won a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, three consecutive Billboard Music Awards for Songwriter of the Year, and has been nominated for thirteen Academy Awards. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. For her success in the UK, she won an Ivor Novello Award in 2008 when she received the Special International Award. On June 21, 2022, it was announced that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would finally award her, after 13 nominations without a win, an honorary Oscar in November of that year at the Governors Awards.

She controls the rights to her music through her publisher, Realsongs. Their debut album was released on August 27, 2021.[3]

Early life[edit]

Warren, the youngest of three daughters, was born to David, an insurance salesman, and Flora Warren[4] in the Van Nuys community of Los Angeles,[5] where growing up she felt misunderstood and “estranged” from. [6] Her family’s last name, “Warren,” was originally “Wolfberg,” but her father changed the name because he wanted it to sound less Jewish.[7] Warren says she was rebellious as a child[6] and told NPR’s Scott Simon that as a teenager she got into trouble and ran away, but came back because she missed her cat.

As a child, Warren loved listening and dreamed of appearing on the radio himself.[7] She was also influenced by the music of her parents and her sisters who played music.[8] She began writing music at age 11 but took a more serious approach at 14, commenting, “Music saved me.” Warren has said that her mother asked her to give up her dream of being a songwriter. and get a secretary job. However, her father continued to believe in her and encouraged her. He also bought her a 12-string guitar and a metal shed to practice on and took her to music auditions.[1] She wrote Celine Dion’s 1996 song “Because You Loved Me” as a tribute to her father for his encouragement.[11]

She attended Los Angeles Pierce College and graduated from California State University, Northridge in 1978, but mostly viewed her education as a waste as she focused most of her time on improving her songwriting skills rather than her education ]

In the February 12, 2016 issue of All Things Considered, Warren said she was molested when she was 12 years old and was later sexually harassed and assaulted by an audio engineer during her professional career.[14]

Career [edit]

Warren’s first hit was “Solitaire,”[5] which Laura Branigan took to #7 on the US pop chart in 1983.[6]

She’s actually more of the Emily Dickinson of pop. As in the case of the great reclusive 19th-century New England poet known for her simple but eloquent verse, Warren leads a life focused almost entirely on her art. Alanna Nash, Good Housekeeping, 1998

The original name of their publisher Realsongs was “Warren Piece” because “War and Peace” was already taken.[15] In 1998, Realsongs and its international partner EMI Music Publishing released A Passion For Music, a six-disc box set showcasing their music. EMI Music’s London office helped distribute 1,200 copies of the box set, primarily to the film and television industry for inclusion in soundtracks and other commercial endeavors. It was not marketed to consumers.[16] As of 2011, Warren’s music has appeared on the soundtracks of over sixty films. She was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame[17] in 2001.[18]

The Diane Warren Foundation, along with ASCAP Foundation and VH1, created a joint initiative, Save the Music Foundation, which began in 2000 entitled Music in the Schools. The initiative provides sheet music, tape arrangements, folios, and method books to all schools that already receive musical instruments from the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.[19]

In 2004, Warren released a love song compilation album entitled Diane Warren Presents Love Songs, which features several of her award-winning hits.

Warren continues to write hits for and with artists across mainstream genres including Stevie B., Celine Dion, Cheap Trick, En Vogue, Whitney Houston, Belinda Carlisle, Taylor Dayne, Britney Spears, Marcia Hines, Alice Cooper, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, TLC, Aaliyah, Heart, Agnetha Faltskog, Elton John, Cher, Tina Turner, Bryan Adams, Selena, Jessica Simpson, Air Supply, Olivia Newton-John, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Roy Orbison, Trisha Yearwood, Patti LaBelle , Michael Bolton, NSYNC, Rene Froger, Gloria Estefan, Reba McEntire, Enrique Iglesias, Paloma Faith, Russell Watson, Rod Stewart, RBD, Aerosmith, The Cult, Kiss, Ricky Martin, Faith Hill, Michael W Smith, Fleisch Loaf, Sugababes, Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Exposé, Leigh Nash of Sixpence None the Richer, LeAnn Rimes, Gavin DeGraw, Kierra Sheard, Mandy Moore, Hilary Duff, Haylie Duff, Lindsay Lohan, Lady Gaga, Chrissy Metz, Claire Richards, Starship and Westlife, who also produce some of the songs. Her songs have been covered by artists such as Joe Cocker, Weezer, Edwin McCain, Milli Vanilli, Mark Chesnutt and Sara Evans.

Warren wrote three songs for Carrie Underwood’s debut album Some Hearts (2005), namely “Lessons Learned”, “Whenever You Remember” and the title track, the latter originally written for Marshall Crenshaw.

In 2009, Warren co-wrote the UK entry for the Eurovision Song Contest with Andrew Lloyd Webber. The song “It’s My Time”[20] was sung by Jade Ewen and peaked at number 5, the best for the UK since 2002.[21]

In 2010, Warren partnered with Avon Products as a celebrity judge for Avon Voices,[22] Avon’s first-ever global online female vocal talent search and songwriting competition for men and women. Warren wrote a special anthem for the competition, which was recorded by the finalists and produced by Humberto Gatica.[23] Warren has been named ASCAP Songwriter of the Year six times and Billboard Songwriter of the Year four times.[24]

In 2012, Warren wrote the song “Counterfeit” for Tulisa’s debut solo album, The Female Boss.

Warren wrote Paloma Faith’s song “Only Love Can Hurt Like This” in 2014.[25]

Warren’s success in the US was paralleled in the UK, where she was ranked the third most successful artist.[26] Peter Reichardt, former chairman of EMI Music Publishing UK, called her “the most important female songwriter in the world”.[27]

Warren is the first songwriter in Billboard magazine history to have seven hits, all by different artists, on the singles chart simultaneously. Warren has had nine of her compositions number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, all by different artists, and overall, more than 30 of her songs have made the US top ten. She also wrote two of the top 13 hits in the 57-year history of the Hot 100 – “How Do I Live” (number four) and “Un-Break My Heart” (number 13).[28] She found even greater success on the US Adult Contemporary chart, where sixteen of her songs reached #1 and a total of more than 40 songs made the top ten on that chart. Warren has had three UK #1 hits and more than 20 top ten hits. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.[29]

Warren’s debut studio album, Diane Warren: The Cave Sessions Vol. 1, was released on August 27, 2021 through Di-Namic Records and BMG.[30] His first single “Times like This” featuring Darius Rucker was released on November 10, 2020.[31] The second single “She’s Fire” featuring G-Eazy and Carlos Santana was released on July 13, 2021.[32][33] The single “Seaside” featuring Rita Ora, Sofía Reyes and Reik was released on the same day as the album.[34]

Personal life[edit]

Warren has never married[35] and does not see himself as a committed person. She has said in interviews that she believes her lack of a romantic life makes her more idiosyncratic as a songwriter.[7] She was in a relationship with songwriter and record producer Guy Roche that ended in 1992[7] and claims not to have had another relationship since, commenting, “I’ve never been more in love than I am with my songs. I’m not like normal people. I’m not good at relationships. I draw drama to me – it’s the Jew in me.”[36] Warren considers herself cynical about romance, but she doesn’t let it influence her songwriting[7] and prefers to write alone rather than co-write, commenting: “When I write with others, the experience is different. You have to compromise, which I have trouble with. I prefer to listen to my own opinion.”[13]

In a 2000 interview, Warren explained that she never let go of music despite experiencing rejection, depression, and poverty.[7] In 1994, Warren’s home was damaged by the Northridge earthquake, leaving her miserable and homeless, drifting from hotels to rental homes. She has said that therapy helped her with songwriting.[7] She has also revealed that she works 12-16 hour days, always takes her keyboard with her when she travels[15] and “…is crazier and more intense than I was when I was 20…”[4]

Warren doesn’t typically let anyone into her Hollywood Hills office,[7] which she describes as a “crowded, vacuum.” In 2012, Warren said her office hadn’t been cleaned or moved in 17 years because she was superstitious; she prefers to regard this room as her “secret world”.[4] In this room, Warren records and plays back melodies on a tape recorder, choosing the songs she likes best.[4] Warren allowed part of an interview with CBS News Sunday morning correspondent Ben Tracy to be taped at the bureau in 2016.[37]

Songwriters Hall of Fame

Diane Warren is considered one of the most prolific and successful contemporary songwriters of our time. A quick look at their top ten hits list reveals a range of music genres and styles so diverse that it’s hard to believe the songs could have been written by the same person.

Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Diane was exposed to Top 40 radio and her talent began to blossom. She loved listening to her older sisters’ records, the likes of Buddy Holly and the Beatles, but she was more fascinated by the songwriters: Carole King, Lieber and Stoller and Burt Bacharach.

Despite her parents’ shared thoughts about her career choice, Warren’s talent and perseverance eventually paid off. In 1983 she had started working as a staff writer for Jack White, a producer for singer Laura Branigan. White asked Warren to prepare English lyrics for a French song. 24 hours later, she turned in “Solitaire,” which became a Top 10 hit for Branigan in 1983. Three years later, Warren wrote “Rhythm of the Night” for DeBarge, which went to number three on the pop chart and number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. To date, she has charted over 80 songs in the top 10.

Diane Warren has written for song legends such as Elton John, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack and Roy Orbison. Artists like Lady Gaga, Cher, Patti LaBelle, ‘N Sync, Gloria Estefan, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Reba McEntire, Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Enrique Iglesias, Aerosmith, Ricky Martin, Faith Hill, Celine Dion, Mary J. Blige and LeAnn Rimes have graced the charts with their songs. Warren herself agrees that she has used this universality of message in her songwriting.

Indeed, Warren’s songs transcended genre. Her number one adult hit “If You Asked Me To” was recorded not only by Celine Dion, but also by R&B diva Patti LaBelle. Her song “Don’t Turn Around” was recorded by eight different artists – from Tina Turner to Aswad to Ace of Base. Her #1 pop hit “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing,” performed by Aerosmith for the movie Armageddon, not only received an Oscar nomination, but also went to number one on the country charts with a version by Mark Chestnut . Additionally, Diane’s song “How Do I Live,” recorded by both Trisha Yearwood and LeAnn Rimes, was not only a No. 1 hit, earning Yearwood the Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance, but also carries the Award for being the longest-running song in the history of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Diane’s songs have been featured in more than 60 films. She had a number one hit with “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” performed by LeAnn Rimes and featured in the film Coyote Ugly. Diane continues to diversify. She teamed up with rock band The Cult, who recorded Painted On My Heart for the film Gone In Sixty Seconds. Bounce, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck, performed “Need To Be Next To You” performed by Leigh Nash of Sixpence None the Richer. The Family Man presented “I Don’t Know How I Got By” performed by Edwin McCain. With an uncanny ability to create the perfect songs for any scene, it’s no wonder Warren continues to win awards. As of 2002, her songs have been nominated for five Golden Globes, eight Academy Awards, and 10 Grammys. “Til It Happens To You,” written for Lady Gaga to sing in harrowing sexual assault documentary The Hunting Ground, brought many to tears when it was performed at the 2016 Academy Awards

Warren’s tremendous success as a songwriter has provided her with the opportunity to support a number of charities. She is a Buddy For Life at the AIDS Project Los Angeles and an Honorary Committee Member of PETA. She was a major donor to the Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance and founded the David S. Warren Weekly Entertainment Series at the Jewish Home for the Aging, a program she created in memory of her father. Due to their success, SCAP and VH1 joined forces as part of VH1’s Save the Music campaign to start the Diane Warren “Music of My Heart”/ASCAP Foundation Music Education Project in 2002. Conducted by the ASCAP Foundation and funded by The Diane Warren Foundation, the project provided tomes, sheet music, ribbon arrangements and “method books” to more than 1,000 middle schools across the country.

Warren has been named ASCAP Songwriter of the Year six times and Billboard Songwriter of the Year four times. Her publishing house, Realsongs, has been named one of the top five music publishers and is the most successful female-owned company in the music industry. In 2001, Warren also received further recognition with a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Meet Diane Warren, Whose Songs You’ve Been Ruining At Karaoke For Years

As the afternoon faded into evening, Warren and Sean were still working on the song in the studio. There was talk of ordering food – everyone ended up getting veggie chili – and when they were satisfied with “Am I missing something?” they decided to record a second song by Warren. “I’m really good at [power ballads], but I do other stuff,” Warren said as we listened to Sean sing a mid-tempo R&B jam called “Used to It,” which was about a guy who told a girl it’s better get used to being treated well. Sean also worked on a rap verse in the middle of the song. “Right now, in 2016, being here with Big Sean is a lot more interesting than a singer I’ve worked with before,” she said.

“You’re so good,” Sean said as he came out of the cabin. “It’s crazy.”

In the second chorus, Warren had changed the word “touched” to “fucked,” and when he came out of the booth, she asked if he wanted to say “fucked” on all the choruses.

“Nah, once. Once in a very special way,” he said and smiled.

Warren left the room for a few minutes, and as her engineers played the track, Sean took one look at Warren’s wall of memorabilia — a hodgepodge of magazine and newspaper clippings, fan letters from prisoners, headshots of Warren from the ’80s — and noticed that a page was torn from Star Magazine entitled “Grande-Sized Ego” about singer Ariana Grande. “Oh shit,” said Sean, who split from Grande in April after eight months of dating — according to TMZ because of his lyric about his “million-dollar chick with a billion-dollar pussy” on the song “Stay Down.” ”

“She wasn’t nice to us,” said one of Warren’s engineers. “We worked with her – that’s why [Warren] put it up.” (Warren recently tweeted a picture of Mouse on a table eating human food and wrote, “Yeah, so I spit on her food, whatever, isn’t that what those Ariana chicks did with that donut?”)

When Warren came back I asked if there was anyone she wouldn’t work with again. “Probably,” she said. “I’d have to think about it. But I always forgive and forget. Especially when they sell a lot of records.”

It was soon time for photos. Warren and Sean picked a few together, and then he sat down next to Batmang to help him choose which ones to post on Instagram. Batmang showed him how to use the Facetune app to edit the images and he finally settled on a photo of them both holding their middle fingers up to the camera and posted it on his Instagram with the caption “Me and my new one best friend Diane Warren ! #legendary.” A few minutes later, Warren asked me to show her how to use her Instagram account, where she had posted a total of three photos, the last of which was one of her and Gaga from a party the night before. ” I use Twitter, I had to get someone show me how to post this photo last night,” she said. “How do I see the photo?” I showed her how to find Big Sean on Instagram and where the photo of the two of them “Wow he’s got so many likes already!” she said.

Warren continued to monitor Instagram and Twitter, where Sean had also posted the photo, and marveled at the number of likes that piled up. “Wow. she said. She scrolled through her mentions on Twitter. “His fans know who I am!” She said. She kept scrolling. “I’ve been at it for a long time. It doesn’t feel like it. It feels like I’m just getting started.”
